RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.
British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."
In December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
